Our Positive Impact
At King Parrot, the natural environment is at the heart of everything we offer. Set across 196 acres of pasture, native bushland, forest gullies and waterways, we recognise our responsibility to care for this special place while creating meaningful experiences for our guests.
Sustainability is an ongoing commitment. We are working to reduce our emissions, use energy and resources more efficiently, protect the surrounding environment and contribute positively to our local community.
Renewable Energy and Emissions Reduction
King Parrot generates renewable electricity through a 30 kW onsite solar system. In April 2026, we expanded this system by installing 56 kWh of solar battery storage.
The batteries are charged entirely by our onsite solar system, allowing us to store surplus renewable electricity generated during the day and use it when the sun is not shining.
Early monitoring in July 2026 indicated that approximately 21% of our electricity was supplied directly by solar generation and a further 18% through solar-charged battery storage. Together, this meant approximately 39% of our electricity needs were being met by renewable energy generated onsite.
We have also upgraded the property’s streetlighting to energy-efficient LEDs and continue to monitor our electricity use to identify further opportunities for improvement.
Our Sustainability and Climate Emissions Reduction Plan
Our Sustainability and Climate Emissions Reduction Plan records the actions we have already completed, the results we are measuring and the next steps we intend to take.
The plan includes our commitments to:
- Establish a consistent annual emissions baseline
- Monitor solar generation, battery performance and grid electricity use
- Increase energy efficiency throughout the property
- Choose responsible electricity-purchasing arrangements
- Reduce waste and improve resource use
- Strengthen water monitoring and conservation
- Continue protecting the property’s bushland, waterways and wildlife habitat
- Review and report on our progress annually
King Parrot also participates in the Tourism Emissions Reduction Commitment program. Our public Carbonhalo dashboard provides further information about our emissions profile, commitments and progress.
Caring for Our Land and Wildlife
We undertake ongoing weed control, fuel reduction and land management across the property to protect native vegetation, wildlife habitat and waterways.
Five kilometres of private bushwalking tracks are regularly maintained, allowing guests to explore the property while helping to protect the surrounding environment.
Guests are encouraged to remain on marked tracks, observe wildlife without disturbing it and leave plants and natural habitats untouched.
Our seasonal land-management work also supports bushfire preparedness and community resilience. This includes reducing fuel loads, maintaining access tracks and firefighting equipment, and protecting available water supplies.
Conserving Water and Resources
Approximately 250,000 litres of rainwater storage supports the property’s water needs and reduces pressure on other water sources.
We encourage thoughtful use of water and electricity throughout our cottages and shared facilities. We also maintain our water infrastructure, monitor for leaks and consider water and energy efficiency when undertaking repairs, improvements and renovations.
Our cottages are supplied with firewood sourced from fallen timber collected and managed on the property wherever suitable, allowing us to make practical use of an existing natural resource.
Reducing Waste
Recycling facilities and clear guest information help visitors reduce waste and care for the property during their stay.
Our current waste-reduction practices include:
- Separating food and garden organic waste through FOGO
- Providing recycling facilities for guests
- Repairing, reusing and repurposing items where practical
- Choosing durable products rather than unnecessarily replacing serviceable items
- Producing hay onsite, reducing the need to transport purchased feed
We will continue reviewing our purchasing and waste practices to identify practical opportunities to reduce avoidable waste.
Supporting Our Local Community
Wherever possible, we work with local tradespeople, suppliers, tourism businesses and food providers, helping visitor spending remain within the wider Otways community.
An electric-vehicle charger is available for guests, with users invited to make a donation to our local Country Fire Authority brigade.
Ryan’s involvement and General Firefighter training with the CFA also contribute to local preparedness and community resilience.
Treading Lightly Together
Our guests play an important role in protecting King Parrot. During your stay, you can help by:
- Conserving water and electricity
- Turning off heaters and lights when they are not required
- Recycling carefully and using the correct waste facilities
- Following all fire restrictions and property safety information
- Remaining on marked walking tracks
- Observing wildlife without disturbing it
- Keeping dogs away from livestock and wildlife
- Leaving the property as you found it
