It is only May, but winter is fast approaching.

The Otways is especially beautiful in winter, as the waterfalls are flowing there is magical fungi to be discovered and the rolling hills of the Pennyroyal Valley are lush and green.  One of my favourite things about winter in the Otways is the winter air.  Somehow in winter, the breeze is laden with the smell of earth, mystery and wonder.

Winter sunrises and sunsets are especially beautiful.  Most mornings we are greeted with the valley blanketed in soft fog and lots of kangaroos grazing with no sound but birdsong.  Misty morning walks, embracing the peaceful sounds of birdsong whilst watching the roos, horses, donkeys, sheep and cows graze is a wonderful start to the day.

The King Parrot Cottages and Event Centre’s own private waterfall walk is especially beautiful in winter.  The track meanders through the rainforest with giant gumtrees and ancient ferns on either side  .  Different species of fungi will delight and a camera is a must!

As the creek is higher than usual due to recent rainfalls, waterproof boots are recommended for the seven creek crossings.  This track is a technically difficult walk so extreme care should be taken especially while crossing the creek.  A willingness to accept the possibility of getting wet is also suggested!

Winter is a time to slow down and turn inward.  A walk through this stunning scenery can encourage a busy mind to relax and focus on the moment to moment beauty of the walk.

You might like to fill your day with more exploring in the Otways, a trip into Lorne for some shopping, surfing or some adventure at the Live Wire Park https://livewirepark.com.au/ .  A drive through the rainforest to Forrest for another beautiful walk around the magical Lake Elizabeth and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Forrest Brewing Company https://forrestbrewing.com.au/  is another great day activity.

Returning to your homely cottage to relax by the cosy fire, maybe cook a delicious meal with some local produce or enjoy a cheese platter with a glass of local red, a book or a board game could be the perfect way to end a wonderful winter’s day.
